Gov. Christie and President Obama Express Disappointment Over Delay in Sandy Aid
Vote on a $60.4 billion aid package delayed in Congress.
Gov. Chris Christie and President Barack Obama each released statements Wednesday expressing disappointment over the failure of the House of Representatives to vote on the $60.4 billion Hurricane Sandy Aid Package and urged Congress to make the bill a priority when it reconvenes Thursday.
Though the U.S. Senate approved the bill Friday, Congress failed to act on the bill, at different times criticizing the allocation of some of its funding, considering splitting the aid package into separate bills, and putting it off until a deal was reached on the impending "fiscal cliff."
Eventually, the decision was made to table it until the New Year.
Christie issued a joint statement with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo late Wednesday morning chastising the House for its seeming indifference when it comes to the victims of Hurricane Sandy.
"With all that New York and New Jersey and our millions of residents and small businesses have suffered and endured, this continued inaction and indifference by the House of Representatives is inexcusable," the release stated. "It has not been 66 days since Hurricane Sandy hit and 27 days since President Obama put forth a responsible aid proposal that passed with a bipartisan vote in the Senate while the House has failed to even bring it to the floor."
The statement continued: "This failure to come to the aid of Americans following a severe and devastating natural disaster is unprecedented. The fact that days continue to go by while people suffer, families are out of their homes, and men and women remain jobless and struggling during these harsh winter months is a dereliction of duty. When American citizens are in need we come to their aid. That tradition was abandoned in the House last night."
Finally: "The people of our states can no long afford to wait while politicians in Washington play games."
New Jersey suffered an estimated $37 billion in property damage according to estimates from Christie's office. The Sandy aid package would provide billions of dollars in grant funding, improvements to infrastructure, and flood mitigation. New Jersey and New York would receive the lion's share of aid from the proposed relief bill.
At a recent town hall meeting in Belmar, Christie said it was crucial that the House pass the aid package, noting that it was a necessary first step toward recovery in New Jersey. The state has several programs lined up to help distribute the aid to residents and small business owners, he said at the time, though nothing can begin until the aid comes in.
The package has drawn complaints from members of Congress, many of them Tea Party members, who argue that the aid package contains too many "pork" provisions, or funding that would be directed toward non-Sandy related projects and programs.
Tea Party advocates, like Americans for Prosperity, have even called for Congress to reject the aid package completely, saying it would just add more debt to a nation already in a financial hole.
The aid package, recommended by Obama, passed with bipartisan support in the Senate 62-32. A stumbling block for the bill has always been the Republican-controlled House, which has battled with the White House in recent weeks over the fiscal cliff deal. On Wednesday, Obama called for Republicans specifically to make the aid package a priority.
Like the joint statement issued by Christie and Cuomo, Obama's message focused on the delay in which it's taken to fund Sandy recovery.
"It has only been two months since Hurricane Sandy devastated communities across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut as well as other eastern states. Our citizens are still trying to put their lives back together. Our states are still trying to rebuild vital infrastructure. And so, last month, working closely with the Governors of the affect states, I sent Congress an urgent request to support their efforts to rebuild and recover. The Senate passed this request with bipartisan support. But the House of Representatives has refused to act, even as there are families and communities who still need our help to rebuild in the months and years ahead, and who also still need immediate support with the bulk of winter still in front of us."
Obama's statement continued: "When tragedy strikes, Americans come together to support those in need. I urge Republicans in the House of Representatives to do the same, bring this important request to a vote today, and pass it without delay for our fellow Americans."
The 113th Congress will reconvene Thursday, though a timetable for the Sandy relief bill has not been set.

The blame is being levied by a Democratic President AND a popular GOP Governor. In the end, the delay in releasing much-needed funds - like those released by Bush for Katrina - only hurts Americans. You can make excuses for the GOP...or see the obvious truth. They'd rather earmark monies for their well-connected lobbyist pals than come to the aid of average citizens.

But your hero Christie is a Republican, and he rightly blamed the Republican obstructionists in the House (right-wing-nut extremists). Ten days after Katrina, Congress voted for $60 billion for Louisiana, Texas and other Republican states. It's time to get rid of Runyon, Smith and others in the Party of No.

I would also suggest that people think twice before they contribute to these huge ad hoc charity programs that suddenly get produced to "raise money" for the poor victimes. We've seen it time and again that only a small fraction of those donations actually go to the victims. Most of the time it somehow gets stuck in someone's deep pockets or gets lost in the production costs of the tv shows or mysteriously disappears.

Oh they must have forgotten to mention how more than half was going to other states for pet projects. Oh and again I almost forgot! Moneys going over seas to aid foreign countries. So I guess because the Republicans are finally getting the message that we are broke and can no longer afford to give every Dick Tom & Harry money that we don't have, know they are mean people who don't care about anyone. What a joke! Let the new congress bring the Aid Bill to the floor for a vote clean of all the extra spending crap. Stop playing politics and get down to the real business of the country. The problem is this is full of "pork". For shame!!! I have to break this down to 2 comments due to the length of the story. See the following article on 2 postings..
Your two senators packed this with pork. They had the opportunity to have a $27 to $30 billion dollar legit relief packages, packed it with pork, then dared us not to vote for it.”
Representative Issa was referring to New York Senators Kristen Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer. Some of the disputed items in the Super Storm Sandy disaster aid bill include a $150 million in funding for Alaskan fisheries. The bill would also have reportedly increased spending to the national flood insurance program, which is expected to max out its borrowing limit next week. If the flood insurance program cannot borrow more money, it will reportedly only be able to pay 12,000 of the estimated 139,000 of the Hurricane Sandy related claims, according to The Atlantic Wire.
Some of the disputed hurricane relief bill pork measures in $336 million in Amtrak expenses and $2 million in taxpayer funds to repair a room on one of the Smithsonian buildings in Washington D.C.

Insurance companies are paying out peanuts. Everyone I know who has major damage is being offered a settlement from insurance that is half of what actual costs to repair are. One example is my brother, his homeowners is through AllState. He has gotten several estimates from licensed contracters that come to an average of $20,000. Allstate is offering 9,000, sent a check even though he was appealing. He has not cashed it and they keep insisting that he cash it "to begin repairs before the damage gets worse" and that they will work out the difference within time. He has consulted 3 lawyers as well as FEMA and ALL of them said don't dare cash that check, because his cashing it would be his accepting their settlement and he will be up the creek without a paddle. FEMA does not want to give him money because his damage is covered under homeowners. It's a vicious cycle, and his is one story among thousands. Most people have not gotten to begin repairs. Federal money is much needed, as well as money from all these donations and fundraisers. The concerts, the red cross, the telethons, where is it all? Such a crooked world we live in.

FEMA has $4.3 billion dollars in their Emergency Fund. There isn't a lack of money at this point. It is management and politics. The DemoRATS are trying to get $13 billion dollars out of this for BullSh*t pet projects. You should be upset with them for using a disaster relief funding bill to squeeze tax payer money for other projects not related to Sandy. If they have an extra $13 Billion, than the relief for Sandy should be $60 Billion.

You can also blame the DemoRATS for this, since they would not concede to spending cuts in the agreed upon budget last night. Again, another promise to handle the spending cuts in the near future. Take a look at history. These promises never come to fruition. In the bill passed last night, there is $1 of cuts for every $41 spent.
If the Republicans turnaround and agree to a relief bill that has $13 BILLION in pork for DemoRAT pet projects, they would be compromising their stance and principles.
It has already been stated that FEMA has $4.3 BILLION in their Emergency Relief fund and have stated that they should be good until Spring. There is no rush on this bill. It is being exploited to point fingers at Republicans and Christie is beginning to look like a RINO

Good! You don't appear to know what you're writting about. You claim the pork was removed, but according to the Congressional Record, it's still there. Apparently you have no knowledge of how bills pass. If bill is changed by the House, it has to go back to the Democrat controlled Senate, Harry Reid, and the Senate committee that has the Democrat Senators who added the pork for their states in the first place. Then if it's not passed in the form that came from the House, it's either defeated or sent to a reconciliation committee.

The remainder of the GOP (if they want to have a Republican Party in the future) need to ignore these 50 or so extremists and move on without them. If they want a Republican Party, they best get rid of the Tea Party. Until the GOP leave the Tea Party behind, everyone will suffer for it. Boehner needs to be sent to the Jersey Shore, Staten Island, or Long Island for a week - then our people will see the money. How much did OHIO get the last time the Ohio River overflowed?

Funny that TimeForChange is quoting a figure of 13 billion when the reports I have seen indicate only millions in pork. The one cite is not from a newspaper or reputable news gathering site but just some minor blog. The final version of the bill that was not voted on had most of the pork removed.
Also the pork was loaded on pretty equally by scummy congressman from both parties. so don't worry about who was at fault, it was Dems & Repubs. But it was the Repubs that prevented the vote.

OK. I am offically bored with your back and forth on the wars. You are WAY off track of the original conversation about Sandy Relief. As a victim of Sandy, I can understand why the vote was put off. The Reps are trying to stick to their promise of unnecessary taxation. The bill is full of New York pork that we will be paying for. That is the conversation......
