Brick Pair Officially Charged With Animal Cruelty

"Sammy'' responding to treatment at vet hospital

The Brick Township couple who brought a nearly dead dog covered in its own excrement to a Tinton Falls animal shelter claiming it was found on the side of a road have officially been charged with three counts of animal cruelty, authorities said Monday.

Keith E. Morgan, 56, and Shauna Ewing Morgan, 43, of Sawmill Road, have each been charged with abandonment, failure to provide sustenance and causing unnecessary suffering, said Charles Webster, Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office spokesman.

Additionally, Keith Morgan is charged with interfering with an investigation, Webster said.

The charges, disorderly persons offenses, carry a maximum of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine, Webster said.

An investigation is ongoing, Webster said. Charges may be added.

The Morgans were charged and released, Webster said. No bail was required.

Meanwhile, the aged Cocker Spaniel taken in by the Associated Humane Society is recovering at the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital and responding well to treatment. He has begun to eat on his own, hospital staff has said.

"We keep telling Sammy how the world is rooting for him and he continues to gain strength," staff said.

Keith Morgan walked into the Tinton Falls AHS building with the nearly deceased dog claiming that he had found the animal in a tied garbage bag on the side of Belmar Boulevard in Wall.

But his story didn't add up, Chief Humane Law Enforcement Officer Victor “Buddy” Amato of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has said.

Amato investigated the claim and found that the dog, named Samurai, was registered to the Morgans in 2007.

Investigators now believe the dog is about 13- to 14-years old, Webster said.

No bail?? You've got to be kidding me! Only $1000 fine? Only a possible 6 months in Jail???? As far as I am concerned they should both be kept in jail for the same amount of time that they kept their dog ilike this, and in the same conditions. Only then will they realize what they did to their dog. I hope they don't have children. If they do they should have them taken away by DYFS. Unbelievable.

Oh thank God he is hopefully going to survive. Thank you so much to all the wonderful people at the vet' office. God puts special people in special places. I am sure all of us out there following this story want to thank you. Kudos. I had my chocolate lab there 7 years ago with congestive heart failure. Her chances seemed slim, but with your help we got to enjoy her two more years . I would like to thank you also for that . You people are GREAT,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,L,,,,,,

The problem with this is that it is just a dog. People in that area and other urban areas treat their kids like that not to mention that the criminal justice system has lessr penalties for drug dealers, murderers and rapists. Lets get our priorities straight. Take care of the dogs after all of the humans are taken car of.

Ivan, dogs are as helpless as children. Animals need humans to take care of them just as children need their parents. Just because you do not value the live of an animal, doesn't mean others do not "have their priorities straight". Anyone that could treat a helpless animal like this is no effing good.

Anyone that can hurt a defenseless animal can and will hurt a defenseless person. You must be just as heartless as these skum bags to not care that they allowed a dog to starve and lay in its own feces and basically watch this poor breathing living animal suffer. I don't have any pets and never did growing up, so I wouldn't call myself an animal lover, but I could never watch any animal suffer.

Priorities are to treat all living helpless, defenseless creatures with the care and love they deserve, in no particular order. You need to get YOUR priorities straight.

NOT THAT THEIR BEHAVIOR WAS ACCEPTABLE AT ALL & NEEDS TO BE PUNISHED TO THE FULLEST, However IF they where financially unable to take care of the dog correctly why don't they just being it to the shelter??.... maybe because even the shelter asks for over 100$ + to take a dog in ... Again MAYBE if they had a open door policy & no questions asked Instead pf people leaving animals on the side of the road they can at least being them into a shelter so that they can be taken care of right & hopefully get adopted to a family that Can take of the animal ... again NOT agreeing with the bahavior But maybe if there was a different option ?

The better thing to do would have bring the poor animal to a shelter when they realized they couldn’t care for it or didn’t want to care for it, not to let the poor dog sit in its own feces & urine for YEARS! The owners are not only heartless abusers they are eternal idiots as well. Makes me glad I don’t have children going to school that could be in that disgusting woman’s classroom.

BS - and I thought such when I first heard the story.. that dog would have been found WELL before then.. they are ignorant and deserve to be charged. I hope they have a huge fine, are never allowed to own an animal again and should have to pay Red Bank Animal Hospital all of the fees that any other person would have to pay; they should not be allowed to just let the bill go or ask for donations to pay for that poor, mistreated creature. My only fear is if we put the word out that we will make these horrible people responsible for the vet bills they will either continue to torture the animal or bury it alive. We need to do two things report any suspected abuse, and give our animal control officers some laws that carry weight. Give them some real power to kick down the door. These animals are not able to call out for help, if you suspect your neighbor is not taking care of their pet, never see it being let out or walked or when you do it is in horrible shape, please report it. We need a no questions asked report policy and drop off at the shelter policy, these people have no heart they are not like you and me and we cannot assume we can make them care. I fear, Alicia78; it's because he actually thought he could get away with it.. I breed Rhodesian Ridgebacks myself which is a very large breed dog and I can tell you this ... that poor dog had to have been confined to some sort of small space whether it be a crate that was too small for him or a room that he was locked in that he barely had enough room to get away from his own potty mess... I read in another comment that someone posted that someone should have reported them prior to it getting this bad... however; the poor thing was probably never seen, never taken for a walk, a trip to the vet... or just to go out and play or take a car ride; it is a shame; and they will get a slap on the wrist. LAWS NEED TO CHANGE..PERIOD.. until the laws are changed unfortunately this will continue to be a problem..

On a good note; I just read that Sammy is now able to stand!! YAY!! EAT THAT KEITH MORGAN

I'm not totally defending the couple who appear to have abused their dog. But, why would he bring the dog to the vet if he was only abusing it? Could it be they had NO money to care for the dog? We all know a vet will never help a poor person animal with needed medical treatment. No cash , no treatment...period. Perhaps that man was trying to help the dog from another person who was abusing the dog, so he concocted a false story to get the medical treatment the animal needed. It just makes no sense that he would bring the dog to a vet. of all places if he was just trying to harm the pet. If he was truly out to abuse that dog, he would have left it to die....not b ring it to the vet. Sorry, but something is not right with this story, it doesn't make logical sense.

Marlee,.... Really... you have got to be joking me... listen no matter how bad off a person is they can take care of a dog... maybe not to the best of their ability but I am sure they could of well.. I don't know WALKED the dog so he could relieve himself .. that last time I checked that service was FREE.. and well how about try bathing the dog yourself.. I am sure they have some soap in the house ... after all Mrs. Morgan is a teacher of special needs children.. so hmmm let me think about that ... wrong again...as for vet care... there are several FREE CLINICS; and vets that hold CLINICS for a very small fee; which is basically a donation to the places that are now saving the dogs life.. so lets not look through such rose colored glasses now...

The problem is Mr. Morgan thought he could get away with it... plain and simple.. if the dog died and he were found out he'd be brought up on more severe charges..

@Marlee - ANY animal costs alot of money. What do you expect, things to come for free? They have to be bathed, groomed, fed, walked, loved, played with, be given medicine, toys, etc .... If they can't afford to take care of the dog, then find it a good home. DO NOT abuse the animal by keeping it locked in a cage, laying in its feces, not feeding him, not walking him. If you saw the picture of Sammy when he was brought to the vet, its quite obvious that this abuse isn't something that happened overnight. It happened over a period of time. I don't give a crap what their reasoning was for all of a sudden having a change of heart and LYING when they turned him in, they are ANIMAL ABUSERS and deserve the WORST for the rest of their life.

How do you expect anyhing to change with animal cruelty, when the punishment clearly doesn't fit the crime. A defenseless animal that did nothing wrong, left to die a horrible death, and the system gives them a slap on the wrist. How will animal cruelty EVER stop when the idiots that have the power to stop it, let them go. We were lucky enough that they were caught, PUNISH THEM TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW, and if the law isn't strong enough to protect these defenseless creatures, then CHANGE IT!. Animals and Children are equally defenseless, if and animal can be abused by criminals like this than children are in jeopardy as well.. Lets do something to to help them....

Abusers MAKE UP stories every day Marlee! Bottom line...if you cannot afford a dog, don't get a dog! And if you do bring an animal into your home and then find you can't afford it, there are OTHER OPTIONS. Don't NEGLECT and abuse the animal because you made a bad decision. Adopt it out to family or friends or a local shelter so it can be placed into a home that will give it proper care and love. How's that for smart? And btw, since you are trying so hard to justify their abuse, are you sure you aren't related?

Why I'm wasting my time acknowledging any of your stupidity is beyond my comprehension, but I will say that I dont recall the last time a nursing home patient was tied and left in a plastic bag to suffer an agonizing death. If you know of, or had a relative that suffered at the hands of a nursing home, there are organizations available that take complaints, and hopefully resolve such issues. What does animal cruelty and nursing home abuse have to do with each other? I cant for the life of me understand what the hell you are trying to say or prove...Sound to me like its the "blah, blah, blah" syndrome, Get a job buddy , or go to work and do something worthwhile to stop abuse of all kinds. If you feel that is a more worthy cause, feel free to protest on that subject on threads that are nursing home referenced This is a article & postings on an animal that was abused. Your comments are just fodder & they make light of what this couple did to this defenseless animal. Besides people have a choice, animals do not. Animals are furry children that depend on us to take care of them.

You are entitled to your opinion but it has no place in this situation. Nursing home abuse is sooo far removed from animal abuse it's ridiculous.
