WED. UPDATE: Boat Had Mechanical Failure Before Hitting Jetty
No injuries when Ocean One Hit Point Beach Jetty at Manasquan Inlet
The Ocean One commercial fishing vessel had a mechanical failure that caused loss of power that led it to collide into the rock jetty on the Point Pleasant Beach side of the Manasquan Inlet, the Coast Guard said on Wednesday afternoon.
The scallop boat was coming back into the inlet when it lost power and the shoal that has developed along the jetty since Sandy had nothing to do with the incident, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Dan Wishnoff.
Three people were safely rescued from a commercial scalloping vessel that drifted onto the rock jetty on the Point Pleasant Beach side of the Manasquan Inlet on Tuesday night, according to the Coast Guard.
There were no injuries among the three, whose names were not yet available, said Joseph Hartline, a general service employee of the Coast Guard.
The crew aboard Ocean One called the Coast Guard at 8:48 p.m. Tuesday to report that they had lost power and were running aground on the rocks, Hartline said.
"They said they still had fuel, I don't know why they lost power," Hartline said, adding that will be part of the continuing investigation.
Five members of the Coast Guard from the Manasquan station removed the three crew members.
The 75-foot steel hull fishing vessel is now on the ground near the inlet and authorities are planning how to remove it, Hartline said.
Point Beach police, the Point Pleasant First Aid and Emergency Squad, a first aid dive team and the Point Beach Fire Department were called to the scene.
Patch will update the story as more information becomes available.

FV Rustbucket? Not sure what that means in referring to the Ocean One. Care to elaborate, KingNeptune?

Did you see the picture, looks like a rustbucket to me. Is this boat even sea worthy. Half the fleet that comes of PPB looks like this. No wonder their aren't more accidents.

I was there. Boat up against the rocks but still floating. CG removes crew but does not tow. Commercial tow boats not available or unwilling to tow. Why didn't the CG tow the boat to a safe location? By leaving it floating by the jetty it was likely to become a more difficult removal problem. Bureaucratic fumble? Why didn't the CG tow it?

Because it's not their job.

If commercial tow boats do not want the job, and that's their choice, when does it become the Coast Guards job? When it sinks in the middle of the inlet? Wouldn't it be easier to move while afloat?

It's not their job period. If the owner is unable or unwilling to have the boat removed, I imagine the CG will find someone who will do it and bill the owner. CG boats and crews are not trained in salvage.

That's funny...the Coast Guard boats and crews not trained to throw a rope.

Sure this was not an onsurance job gone bad. Many times these things are, just look at the boat.

Commercial fishing is a dangerous job, more dangerous than, mining. The scallop industry is controlled by quotas by the National Marines Fisheries Service, the Captain most likely had his quota and was heading home to the Manasquan Inlet. Perhaps there is a lot of Schoaling around the Jetties after Sandy, so for whatever reason, he lost power there. No Captain wants to risk his life, and crew to go aground.

social media is proof positive that idiots have a comment about everything , but Know nothing.
a fishing boat is not a luxury ship and rust stains appear on them all the time due to the materials and equipment used, the boat may look terrible, but they have to pass an inspection, so get a grip and find something to do

regarding the Coast Guard and 'not their job' There is a timid philosophy that considers that remark an explanation for not doing something. 'I won't help because it's not my job'. When there is an important task to be performed in a timely fashion, a logical person or organization does what has to be done. The 'not my job' person steps back and let's the situation worsen. I'd prefer to hear about people who 'step up to the plate' and do what should be done. Note this property reference for the USCG mission: Search and Rescue (SAR) is one of the Coast Guard's oldest missions. Minimizing the loss of life, injury, property damage or loss by rendering aid to persons in distress and property in the maritime environment has always been a Coast Guard priority.

Its not that the CG doesn't want to they arent allowed to ... if the CG tows it they would be "interfering with private enterprise" ... not the CG fault ...

Did we not see this insurance aspect before with the golden eagle that ran aground in the inlet by dog beach a few years back. It was an old wood boat they wanted to scrap.
Does anyone remember the other boat that ran into the rocks on the point side and all the crew got off and ran in the streets before they cold be questioned. That was only a few years back as well.
It may be dangerous, but it is also not always profitable and the people involved can be seedy a times.
