Belmar School Officials Issue Letter to Parents on Newtown Violence

Letter went out Dec. 17 to parents

Dear Parents/Guardians:

We are deeply saddened by the devastating tragedy which occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims and the entire community of Newtown.  The safety of your child is our school’s highest priority. During this time when children and parents are witnessing  countless upsetting media images of the events that unfolded in Connecticut, we want to reassure you that our entire staff will be working together in the best interest of your child.  While this tragedy will not be discussed by teachers with students, should children bring up the topic our goal will be to reassure them that they are safe at school.  Our crisis intervention team will disseminate information to our staff about the appropriate ways to respond to children’s concerns and will be immediately available to any child exhibiting signs of trauma or stress.

This is a stark reminder of the importance of our school’s safety procedures and security drills.  Each month we regularly conduct a variety of drills, including evacuations, lockdowns, fire and active shooter drills, to ensure that both staff and students are aware of the necessary procedures required to maximize everyone’s safety in the event of an emergency.

It is imperative that you assist us as parents in following our front office procedures when arriving at school. Use the front entrance only when visiting the school and be prepared to press the security buzzer, state your name and the purpose for your visit.  Except in cases of assemblies or pre-arranged classroom visits, parents and guests will be prohibited from entering through the second security door to gain access to classrooms.  We ask for your continued cooperation in maintaining these procedures.

Please contact the school if you have any questions about these procedures.

Sincerely,

Mr. David R. Hallman, Superintendent/Principal

Mrs. Lisa J. Hannah, Assistant Principal/Director of Curriculum

Mrs. Elizabeth Cole, Director of Special Services/Supervisor of Instruction
