Belmar Man Flees Police; Caught Later Near Boardwalk

Resisting arrest and obstruction added to charges

 

A Belmar man who ran away from police after being stopped on Belmar Boulevard Wednesday morning was later found along the Belmar waterfront, authorities said.

Richard Loomis, 44, was pulled over while driving on Belmar Boulevard near Colfax Plaza arond 9:30 a.m. Loomis pulled over into the plaza and the passenger of the vehicle, Christopher Hanford, 29, of Brick was detained, Sgt. Kenneth Brown said.

Looms, however, fled on foot through the plaza and into the North Wall Little League fields, tossing off his hat and shirt along the way, Brown said.

A K-9 unit was called to track Loomis, who was later found along the Belmar beachfront near 16th Ave., Brown said.

Police later found that Loomis fled because his license was suspended and there was an active warrant for his arrest, Brown said.

Loomis also was charged with obstruction and resisting arrest, Brown said.

Hanford was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernailia, hypodermic syringes and prescription drugs that were not prescribed to him, Brown said.

The pair was taken to Monmouth County jail, Freehold Township. Loomis' bail was set at $2,500 and Hanford's bail was set at $10,000, Brown said.
