The work of driving boardwalk pilings 20 plus feet into the ground with giant construction equipment is noisy and starts at 7 a.m. each day, said Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty.
The 7 a.m. start time might inconvenience Ocean Avenue residents, but it's necessary, said the mayor. He issued a statement of apology for the noise but promised the work would continue at that hour until the boardwalk is rebuilt.
"Construction is allowed to start at 7am Mon-Fri. I am sorry for the inconvenience, but it is necessary," said the mayor from his twitter account, responding to comments that the start time seemed early for residential areas.
The piling work began Jan. 9, with a visit from Gov. Chris Christie to help drive the first pilings along the beachfront. Destroyed from Hurricane Sandy, the boardwalk has a planned Memorial Day reopening.
Piling work is more than 20 percent complete, Doherty said.
A contract for the total construction has a bonus built in if Epic Construction has the work complete before April 30, and the company would be fined daily if late.
Belmar is aggressively using the time left before April 30 to rebuild the boardwalk, even diverting its original choice of wood (ipe rainforest timber) after a possible legal battle with the Sierra Club over the ipe wood could have stalled the project.

Better make sure you put in a lot of extra support if you are going to use plastic wood. Among the long list of negatives with plastic wood is it sags. Wood does not.

I am sure they will.
They can replace it properly with the IPE wood, section by section. Maintenance work is usually not required to be announced prior to doing it, which would make it very difficult to interfere with. Also; after the town is back on it's feet, Belmar will have the time to successfully litigate with the Californazis without imploding our local economy.
May Mother Nature insure the members of the Sierra Club have pernicious infestations of hungry sand fleas at home, & are stung in delicate areas by jellyfish if they dare to enter the ocean as payback for this eco-unfriendly publicity stunt. They were trying to keep the boardwalk from being rebuilt, period. They would be happier if nothing within 5 miles of the ocean was rebuilt. Dogs in the manger. The Sierra Club do not want to have any boardwalk at all, so they were trying to make sure no one else could have one either.
Razzberries in the Sierra Club's general direction, & a hand show of the state BIRD expressly for their perusal! See everyone at the opening! I can hardly wait to run the boards again!

My husband & I watched it together. We were suitably impressed. Less than 5 minutes per pylon including the lift. Wow!

Ninety minutes shortened into 28 seconds.
Twenty piles being installed in those 90 minutes.
